Breast Feeding Support
What does it mean to be an NCT breastfeeding counsellor?
NCT breastfeeding counsellors are trained to Diploma level through the University of Bedfordshire. Throughout training they attend monthly tutorials where they learn about common breastfeeding issues and learn and practice counselling skills. After a minimum of two years training, this includes independent study, essay writing, and two residential weekends focusing on counselling skills and facilitating antenatal classes. NCT Breastfeeding Counsellors offer active listening and fact based information on breastfeeding issues. They are not experts, but Mums who have breastfed and then gone on to learn a bit more about it in order to support other mothers with their feeding experiences.
What breastfeeding support do we offer?
In Liverpool, we run a weekly bumps and babies group in St Marys Church, Wavertree (Thursdays, 1-3pm). Attending this group is free of charge and is open to all pregnant women and women with new babies in Liverpool. There is usually a breast counsellor there every week to offer one-to-one support for breastfeeding mothers. At this group we have a breastfeeding accessories library, where dvds, parenting books, breastfeeding tops and cushions can be borrowed for a small charge. Each antenatal class also involves a breastfeeding session, where you can ask questions and share concerns. At the end of the session we hope you will feel confident in your body to breastfeed your baby.
Liverpool NCT also offer a bra fitting service, contact 0844 243 6191 or email info@liverpoolnct.org.uk for more information.
If you need urgent support, you can also phone our National Breastfeeding Helpline on 0300 3300771, which is staffed by breastfeeding counsellors across the UK between 8am and 10pm, 7 days a week.
