Bump to baby (perinatal) courses
These courses provide a complete course by combining a standard antenatal course, a breastfeeding class, a reunion and a postnatal discussion course. Women and their partners or supporters generally attend together for the antenatal part, although some courses include some women-only sessions.
After having my first baby last year I completed a six-week Early Days course. I liked the continuity of support, having been on the NCT antenatal course. Being able to talk to other mums going through the same experiences, at the same time, is a unique experience and really helped me. |
Courses are evening or weekend sessions with some running daytimes in the week. The postnatal part of the course is usually attended by women and generally runs on weekday mornings.
Perinatal course hours are generally around 16 hours of antenatal, a two hour breastfeeding class, a two hour reunion and about six hours postnatally. There are usually between 26 and 30 hours of time with an NCT trained specialist worker in all.
Our courses all vary slightly because each course is designed around the group of people who are on the course to meet their needs. Most courses run as a set of sessions with the same group attending each session.
Parents will get to know others in a similar position and attendees often find the people they meet on these courses become an important support in the months and sometimes years after their babies are born.
