About Postnatal Classes

Postnatal Courses… are they for me?

Fiona Barlow, Postnatal leader, answers some frequently asked questions:

My Health Visitor is running a course – do I need both?

NCT postnatal courses are unique, throughout the course the emphasis is on the mother and not the babies. The Health Visitors run postnatal courses locally, these courses are valuable and compliment the NCT course.

What topics are covered on the course?

The NCT postnatal course will look at the issues that affect new mothers, such as making decisions, adjusting to motherhood, coping with conflicting advice, changing relationships and returning to work. Please note these courses are not designed to give childcare advice.

How long are the courses and do I need to come every week?

The course is six weeks long, each sessions is two hours. Attendance at all six sessions is recommended, however if you can’t make one week, don’t worry!

Will I learn baby massage and first aid?

No, theses topics are often covered in NHS postnatal courses, the NCT course focuses on you!

I don’t know anyone locally will I meet other mums?

You will have the chance to meet other mothers in a similar situation and explore issues, getting to know each other is an important part of the course!

My baby cries a lot will I be asked to leave the room?

No, you will be given support and are welcome to stay in the room even if your baby is crying. You may of course wish to go somewhere more private, however every effort will be made to ensure you feel comfortable.

I am a bit shy so don’t want to be part of a large group…

The NCT postnatal groups are small and informal; you will be able to discuss the issues that affect you in a safe and friendly environment. You may prefer to just listen, you will still gain a great deal from being there.

How old should my baby be?

The course is suitable for any mother with a baby who is not crawling. However, women seem to gain more from the course if they start when their baby is between six and ten weeks old.

Will I be able to feed my baby?

Yes, there are provisions for both breast and bottle feeding mothers, if you need anything please speak to your course leader.

I did not attend antenatal classes - can I still join these groups?

The courses are open to anyone who has had a baby recently, you do not have to have attended antenatal classes or be a member of the NCT.

We can’t afford the fees…

The NCT is a charity, reduced fees are available in cases of genuine hardship, so please speak to the booking secretary, and all information is confidential. For more information or to make a booking email Louise.
