NCT Statement on Latest Maternity Statistics from NHS

Released on 29/09/2008

Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive, NCT, said:

Figures show we are still exposing a high number of women (24 per cent) to caesarean sections.  Despite the fact caesareans have remained stable, this is still far too high for the recommended World Health Organisation rate of 10 to15 percent.

The NCT is concerned that women are spending less time in hospital after a caesarean section. Women who are recovering from caesarean will need more help and support and guaranteed midwife home visits, especially if they have had previous health problems. Without this support, the start of motherhood could be an unpleasant experience. Additionally, women who have had an emergency caesarean will not be prepared and will need support when they get home.

By giving women one to one midwifery care and good support during labour we can help to reduce the risk of caesarean section and give women every possible chance to have a straightforward birth.
