Providing support to parents
Social and emotional support
The NCT offers social and emotional support to thousands of parents all around the UK, with experience of tailoring classes and groups to meet every need, such as ‘Speed Bump’ drop-in sessions for new mums, developing classes for young parents and groups that support second time around parents. We also provide positive support networks to help parents cope with postnatal depression.
Our helplines provide support and reassurance on breastfeeding and being a parent. These numbers are available on free cards to hand out at your organisation – order your set at enquiries@nct.org.uk
Reaching Out
The NCT is committed to ensuring that all parents are able to access effective support. We have developed a wide range of skills in working with community groups, including black and minority ethnic families and young parents, through partnerships with local organisations and courses tailored to parents’ needs.
Case study: Working with parents in temporary accommodation
The NCT provides parenting classes for mothers at a hostel for young women. Attendance is very high and residents attend on a weekly basis, even though consistent attendance is not compulsory. Some attendees are struggling to be teenagers as well as parents, so the classes aim to give them an outlet to explore some of their feelings as well as improve their parenting skills. Through the success of this project, the NCT is now working on developing antenatal classes for young parents in the local area.
