Case study: Parent Access Education Programme
Many young women leave school early due to becoming a mum, so the NCT has developed a Parent Education Access Programme (PEAP) to help young mums prepare for the challenges of Higher Education. In partnership with Straight Talking, a peer support charity, the course is now in it’s second year and includes residential programmes to provide the students with the time to complete their modules away from the pressures of being a parent.
Straight Talking’ s Chief Executive Hilary Pannack says: ‘This training has provided a forum in which teenage parents’ own expertise and life experience can be transformed and channeled into something positive. Working with such a well known and trusted organisation as the NCT has been vital in securing our teenage parents’ commitment and enthusiasm for the training, as well as being of great benefit to Straight Talking when seeking support elsewhere.’
