Supporting the Emotional Health of Teenage Parents

(including working with postnatal depression)

Date & Venue:  Tuesday 21st September 2010 - London

By the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify reasons why younger parents are especially vulnerable to emotional ill health (i.e. depression)
  • Examine the effectof postnatal ill health on the wider family, especially the partner and child
  • List the symptoms exhibited by those experiencing baby blues, postnatal depression (PND) or puerperal psychosis
  • Compae a variety of theoretical approaches to emotional health imbalance and examine te relevance of psychological and sociologcal stresses
  • Identify support options for young parents
  • Examine the barriers young parents may experience in accessing available services
  • Reflect on local provision and suggest ideas to dvelop the local services

By the end of the workshop, participants will have had an opportunity to:

  • Have developed an outline antenatal course adaptable to their specific needs
  • Understand the different ways adults learn
  • Understand how to use a variety of teaching methods
  • Be able to involve clients in agends setting, reviewing and evaluation
  • Have practised and understood the importance of teaching physical skills for labour
  • Have explored ways to involve partners in an antenatal course
This workshop is intended to supplement the training a health professional has already received in delivering antenatal education

  • Identify the learning styles of young parents
  • Identify the facilitation skills needed to keep the interest of young parents in classes
  • Practise a range of teaching ideas to make learning fun and effective for young parents 
This workshop is intended to supplement the training a health professional has already received in delivering antenatal education

Breastfeeding Works and How!

By the end of the workshop participants will have had the opportunity to:

  • Understand how breastfeeding works and importance of baby led feeding
  • Understand more about breastfeeding difficulties and how it relates to own practice
  • Understand good positioning and attachment and how this can pevent common breastfeeding problems
  • Know what research based information to give mothers about breastfeeding with information on new laid back positions
  • Identify different situations mothers may need extra support and information with their breastfeeding difficulties - Expressing, Thrush and Mastitis, Poor Weight Gain, Tongue Tie
  • Be able to identify when and who to refer mothers to for further support/information
