NCT supports the Department of Health and National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommendations that women limit their consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. We would suggest expectant mums follow the Department of Health advice to avoid alcohol completely or to cut down to one or two units of alcohol once or twice a week while pregnant.
Commenting on the Diageo investment, NCT CEO Belinda Phipps said: "NCT believes that all information which women receive in pregnancy should be impartial and delivered free of bias. As such it is essential that this programme, while funded by a drinks manufacturer, is independently proven to be robustly based on evidence and that in the delivery of the information to women, no commercial influence is seen. Materials should not carry corporate branding or be in any way seen to influence the decisions of women who receive the information from midwives trained with this funding".
"NCT would prefer to see a central fund for responsibility to which manufacturers could contribute. Department of Health could then develop programmes independently of individual companies. There would then be no risk of inadvertent advertising of or connection with specific products which may present risk of harm to certain groups".
