From where to give birth to knowing when your contractions are really getting underway, NCT antenatal classes are a great way to find answers to all your questions about labour and birth.

Pregnant womanThe Sunderland and South Tyneside branch's antenatal courses are run in the evening over a number of weeks or over a full weekend. If you are interested, we recommend that you get in touch when you are around three months pregnant, but don't worry if you are further on, we should still be able to find a place on a course for you.

Most parents on the courses will be first-timers, but all mums and dads or birth partners are welcome, whether it's your first or fifth baby!

What do NCT courses cover?

Our small and friendly antenatal course will focus on providing you with the information and skills you need to make your own decisions about your labour and birth. Each NCT antenatal class is flexible to allow each group to focus on their own needs and spend more time on the topics that are most relevant to them.

Some of the topics we cover include:

  • Choosing where to have your baby
  • Body awareness, relaxation, breating and massage
  • Home births and water births
  • What happens in labour and how the baby is born
  • Pain relief - natural and medical methods
  • Your labour and the role of the partner in labour
  • What complications might arise e.g. caesarean birth
  • Looking after and feeding your newborn baby
  • Early parenting, lifestyle changes

We include a session with a qualified breastfeeding counsellor. These friendly sessions provide practical information to help you to start breastfeeding and to consider what life will be like with a new baby.

Full participation in the discussions and practice sessions ensure that couples get the most out of the course. The classes are informal and friendly with many groups staying in touch after the course has finished. We also have a reunion after the course has finished, after the babies are born.

What does the course cost?

NCT antenatal courses are priced according to the number of teaching hours and the area of the UK it takes place. We charge for antenatal classes in order to cover the costs to the charity for providing this service and to help us to provide services for all parents.

Everyone is welcome to pay by instalments and we offer discounts of up to 90% for parents in receipt of benefits or on lower incomes. Please request further information from the course administrator when you enquire about your antenatal course.

How do I find antenatal classes in my area?

You can find a list of all the courses for our branch at our NCT courses for Sunderland & South Tyneside page.

Alternatively you can find a course by entering your postcode into our Course Finder.

You can also telephone Leigh on 0844 243 6851 or email bookings7c@nct.org.uk for further information.

Sometimes you may be offered a course in a neighbouring branch area, but there will usually be courses running in Sunderland too, so if that is what you are wanting (as making local friends is probably something you want out of the course) then just ask!
