Bexley and District NCT Branch are running a Baby First Aid course in partnership with the British Red Cross.
This course give parents essential baby first aid skills and confidence that could save their child’s life.
What is a Baby First Aid course?
The NCT Baby First Aid course has been created as a bespoke course. NCT recognises how important it is for parents to have basic first aid skills and the confidence to use them in an emergency. However rare it is for accidents to happen, it’s great to know you’re prepared to cope if you need to.
Babies in arms are welcome to attend with adults - up to the age of 6 months.
The course covers first aid techniques for babies (0-1yrs) and children (1-12yrs) - The course lasts for 2.5 hours - the topics covered include:
* Unconscious baby and child (breathing or not breathing)
* Choking baby and child
* Raised temperature
Who should come to a Baby First Aid course?
The NCT Baby First Aid courses are suitable for parents, expectant parents and carers of babies and young children.
Would you know what to do in an emergency?
Being prepared for any eventuality could save your baby's life.
Emma Louise Riley took part in a Baby First Aid course and a few months later she saved her son from choking. Here is her incredible story.
“I was sitting in a café in Durham with my nine month old son. He was eating some pasta. I looked at my son and realised his lips had gone blue. I could see he couldn’t breathe.
"I instantly went into over drive. I quickly looked in his mouth and saw some pasta. The next couple of seconds felt like hours as I did what I was taught to do when a child is choking. I remember getting it out and hearing him scream with fright and then I burst into tears.
"One thing that stays with me is that everyone was watching, but no one helped. I believe this was because they didn’t know what to do. The scary thing is I wouldn’t have known what to do if I hadn’t done the course. It’s not the only occasion I’ve used my training, but the day my son couldn’t breathe and I saw the panic in his eyes will stick with me forever.
"I’d recommend a first aid course for every parent or expectant parent as one day you will be glad you knew what to do.”
