Over almost 60 years we have amassed an extensive and unique collection of materials charting the course of women’s social history.

An exciting new development is that NCT’s archive has now been deposited at the Wellcome Library where it is currently being catalogued.

It is anticipated that the collection will be catalogued and available for research by autumn 2015. The collection includes core records and papers of the organisation dating back to 1956. This exciting project will preserve and promote the work of NCT and its many supporters over almost six decades.

At NCT's volunteer and practitioner event Babble Live! 2014, which took place in Birmingham last October, we brought a state-of-the-art portable recording booth to record attendees' stories about their experiences of birth, motherhood and how NCT supported them. We had 52 people record their experiences of NCT and comments included

"it's been a journey of self-discovery. I fell in love with NCT for ever!";

"I felt quite empowered going into the birthing experience";

"...normalised breastfeeding and made me more confident doing it";

"NCT is a fantastic resource".

Now we want to create an oral history archive that will preserve more of this important, but often neglected, area of our national history. We  are hoping to interview current and former members from the past six decades to create an oral history of maternity and early parenthood: a hugely important aspect of society and women’s lives.

Your place in history

While we will draw what we can from our own resources, we need to find further funds to interview past and present members from the past almost 60 years since NCT was founded. And of course, we need to show that our members are engaged and willing to be involved in the project.

Because, after all, our history is your history – and the many that have gone before you.

So for a donation as little as £2.00 you can help us make history. The more donors we have, and the more support we can illustrate, the greater the chance of us securing funding.

To text your support and make a donation to the archive project all you need to do is text the code CBCL50 + your donation amount (e.g. 2 for £2.00 - or more if you can) to 70070.

Or you can also show your support through the NCT Archive JustGiving page.

Put yourself in the picture

And of course, we’re also very interested in receiving donations of archival material such as photographs, committee meeting papers or other items that would have historical importance for the charity. If you have anything you think might be of interest, just email library@nct.org.uk giving details.
