Breastpump Hire - Islington

Why might I need to use a breastpump?

If you choose to breastfeed your baby, you may consider using a breastpump. Talking to a Breastfeeding Counsellor is often useful in helping to decide when is the right time to start expressing and what is the right breastpump for you.

  • Using a breastpump can be helpful in a variety of situations:
  • Give you a break while your partner or other family members help with feeding.
  • Enable you to leave breastmilk for your baby if you need to be away from them for a period of time.
  • Allow you to provide breastmilk to be given in Special Care or Neonatal Intensive care if your baby needs extra care after birth.
  • Give you the reassurance if you are returning to work that your baby can still receive optimum nutrition from your expressed breastmilk.

Would a manual pump or hand expressing work just as well as an electric pump?

Hand expressing or using a manual pump can work very well but some mothers will feel more comfortable using an electric pump. Research suggests that mothers who use an electric breastpump appear to be able to express greater volumes of breastmilk compared to hand expressing. Simultaneous pumping is another benefit of dual electric breastpumps, as it's possible to express from both breasts at the same time.
