birth experiences

This monthly group is an informal coffee morning setting where parents can support one another in a safe space discussing as little or as much as they like. There is also a secret Facebook group for people that have attended the group so we can continue to support one another between face to face meet ups.

We have a small library of leaflets and books for parents and we can signpost further information where relevant.

Children are very welcome at the group and we have floor mats, toys and access to baby changing facilities.

As an antenatal teacher, Amy Delicate can use her knowledge of labour and birth to help answer questions about birth experiences, to signpost further support and if appropriate share information regarding future birth choices.

Sessions are held at Charnwood Childrens Centre on the fourth Friday of the month. Please see our facebook page for details or email coordinator.lichfieldandtamworth@nct.org.uk

At the end of 2007 Amy started her training as an Antenatal Teacher with the NCT, qualifying in 2010 and since that time she has had the privileged of teaching over 1000 women and their birth partners. Amy qualified as an NCT Excellent Practitioner in March 2014 which enabled her to develop a birth trauma study day which she now delivers to NCT practitioners.

In September 2015 Amy started a PhD investigating the impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship and what support they need to recover. Amy hopes this research will increase the awareness of birth trauma, the issues it creates for women and their partners, and act as a motivator to increase the support available to parents.

Feedback from those attending the group

" I started to attend the group when I was pregnant with my second child and I needed to make some decisions about the type of birth I wanted. I was seriously considering asking for a caesarean as I felt quite anxious abiut my previous birth experience and I felt like I'd failed. Amy helped me to understand that your mental health really is as important as your physical health: a healthy baby isn't the only thing that matters. I had a much more positive and empowering birth second time around. I can't thank Amy, the group members and NCT enough. I wish this group had been around when I had my first child as talking about the issues I experienced would have helped ease the difficult start I had to parenthood."

"For me, the Birth Experiences group was both incredibly supportive and informative. I too attended whilst pregnant with my second child as I was feeling very anxious about giving birth again. Going to the group helped me to better understand and process the events of the first birth. With the help of Amy and the group I was able to reflect on my first birth and pick out positive elements to it as well as discussing ways to hopefully avoid/minimise the chances of certain events happening again. I felt more confident when I was meeting with consultants and midwives during my second pregnancy as I had a better understanding of the options open to me. A huge thank you to everyone."
