Online support networks for parents-to-be

Our monthly Yahoo groups are initially set up around the 7 months pregnant mark, but you can join a group anytime after this. Each group is made up of Hackney residents whose babies are due in the same month as yours. The aim of the groups is to provide a forum for chat about all things baby-related with a large number of parents, and also to arrange some social get-togethers on a smaller scale.

Our volunteer facilitators set up the group and give you a few suggestions, then it is primarily up to the members to run the group from there on in. They all continue for a few months after the babies are born, but in many cases are still going strong a year later. At this point our volunteers hand the group back to the members to own for themselves.

The types of discussions on the Yahoo monthly groups are:

  • Meeting up before and after the babies are born
  • Sharing experiences re hospitals and antenatal advice
  • Breastfeeding advice
  • Sleeping advice
  • Shopping advice and general support

“Being a member of a monthly Yahoo group was like a lifeline in the run-up to becoming a first-time Mum and in the weeks and months afterwards. Before the births, we would meet up drink tea, eat cake and wonder what our babies would be like. Then everyone started having their babies and the messages of who was called what came through and then the emails about breastfeeding arrived, with emails about how to get the babies to sleep hot on their heels, and tales about the fun and frustration of being a new Mum. Some of my firmest ‘Mummy’ friends have been made via my NCT Yahoo Group” Jo, N16

If you would like to join one of our monthly Yahoo groups, and haven't already heard from us by the time you are 7 months pregnant, please send an email to with your estimated due date, your postcode and a phone number.
