Your developing baby

Your baby is continuing to grow and gradually putting on weight. 

Their sense of taste has begun to form and they’ll now be able to hear - and recognise - your voice. Try and talk to your baby regularly, and encourage your partner to as well. You may even notice your baby start to respond to noises such as conversations, music or television.

Week 21

Constipation in pregnancy

As parts of your body relax and make room for your baby they can also cause constipation. It’s important to avoid straining when you go to the toilet - not only for your comfort - but because it puts less strain on your pelvic floor muscles. 

To reduce the chances of experiencing constipation, try to drink plenty of water and include a lot of fibre in your diet by eating wholegrain bread, rice and pasta. Regular exercise can also help.

Planning a home birth?

You don’t need lots of equipment for a home birth, and the size of your home is not important, as long as you are able to provide a few essentials, and create a comforting environment. 

Your midwife will normally bring a homebirth kit to your home towards the end of your pregnancy. Ask her what is provided, and if there is anything else that she would like you to have ready. Some midwives suggest preparing a 'birth box' with items you'll need.

Planning finance

Setting aside time to work out how you and your partner will budget for your baby can be really beneficial. For instance, you could calculate the costs of what you might need to buy for your baby and make sure you’re claiming any benefits and entitlements.
