Week 18

Support and information from NCT

NCT offers reliable support and information about the various stages of pregnancy, week by week.

Your developing baby

Your baby is about 14cm long and it is now possible to visually tell their sex.

They’re making developments in their reflexes this week, as they begin to hear and feel. They will also be making basic eye movements.

Week 18

Top tips for back pain

The weight of your baby in your abdomen means back pain is incredibly common during pregnancy.

Keep an eye on your posture and try sitting up straight with your lower back supported. Always lift bending your knees rather than your back and try to avoid lifting anything heavy. Wearing flat or low-heeled shoes and using a firm mattress can also help.

Time for a new wardrobe?

As your bump and breasts get bigger, why not embrace your new body and go shopping to expand your wardrobe? It doesn’t have to be expensive. Good quality second-hand maternity wear is available.

Check out your next local NCT Nearly New Sale and grab yourself a bargain.

Anomaly scans

Most hospitals offer a detailed ultrasound scan between 18-20 weeks of pregnancy, sometimes called an anomaly scan. This is a detailed examination of the structure and organs of your baby, including the brain, heart and lungs. You may also be offered screening and diagnostic tests at around 18 weeks which you can accept or refuse to have. Whether you are eligible for them will depend on a number of factors including your age, health and genetic history.

Checklist

Have you read up about your options for where to give birth?

You can discuss your options and anything that is worrying you with your midwife.
