Week 7

Support and information from NCT

NCT offers reliable support and information about the various stages of pregnancy, week by week.

Pregnancy week 7

Your baby is now around 9mm long and their brain will be developing rapidly. Their facial features will also become more prominent and their eyes will develop as their eyelids begin to grow over in a protective layer. Their elbows will start to form where the arms bend and they will develop a finger shape.

Week 7

Food, glorious food

Pregnancy can be a great time to think about the nutritional value of your diet. Healthy eating can make a big difference to you and your baby. If you eat a variety of foods from the different food groups every day, with plenty of vegetables and fruit you’re more likely to get the balance of nutrients that you and your baby need.

However, a folic acid supplement is still recommended at this stage as well as vitamin D throughout pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist and check our website for more information.

Sex in the first trimester

Pregnancy hormones might make some women feel like having sex less because they're tired, their breasts might feel tender or because they’re suffering from pregnancy sickness.

On the other hand, you may find that you still feel really sexy. Go with how you’re feeling and follow what your body tells you. Share how you’re feeling with your partner and speak to your midwife if you have any worries or concerns.

Blood loss: what to be aware of

It’s quite common to lose some stale brown blood or even a little bright red blood in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. However, a heavy loss could be a sign of miscarriage, particularly if it’s accompanied by lower backache.

Contact your GP or midwife who will be able to refer you for a scan. This video can also provide you with more information on bleeding in pregnancy.

Checklist

Have you sent off your maternity exemption certificate

Arrange a booking appointment with your midwife who will sign the form.
