Responding to today’s MBRRACE-UK report, NCT’s head of research Dr Sarah McMullen said:

“The findings relating to maternal suicide are deeply concerning and underline the huge importance of specialist perinatal mental health services.

"Worryingly NCT’s research has shown staggering gaps in specialist mental health services for new and expectant mothers – only 3% of CCGs told us they had a perinatal mental health strategy. We also know that new mums find it incredibly hard to talk about mental health - work needs to be done to break the stigma and dispel the myths.

"Our #BeyondBabyBlues campaign is calling for improved access to support and treatment so that all new mothers experiencing mental health difficulties receive the support they need.”
