The Labour MP Graham Allen is calling for a National Parenting Campaign, which would see both public money and private investment used to fund a series of schemes designed to positively affect the lives of the most vulnerable children in society.

Elizabeth Duff, Senior Policy Adviser, NCT, said:

“NCT profoundly agrees with the report’s emphasis on the importance and value of parenthood and believes support should be offered where needed as early as possible, beginning before the birth of the baby.

“We strongly support the value of parenting education and relationship education for young people at all stages, as well as encouraging parents to recognise the impact of their caring behaviour on their children.

“We endorse the recommendation that all key professionals are made aware of the importance of promoting and supporting good parenting and building on the social and emotional capabilities as an immediate priority. As an organisation which places a high value on evidence to support decision-making, we also support the priority given to evidence-based selection of programmes.

“Experiences of pregnancy, birth and the early weeks with a new baby can have a long-lasting impact on the family and it is important women begin motherhood feeling good about themselves and valued and supported by others. Services provided by professionals and voluntary bodies to expectant, new and more experienced parents, should be parent-centred, aiming to build confidence through self empowerment.”
