NCT, the UK’s largest parenting charity, comments on the Government’s response to the Select Committee on Sure Start Children’s Centres:

Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive, NCT, said:

“We are concerned that without ring-fencing the investment for Sure Start Children’s Centres, local authorities are going to find themselves in a position where they make decisions which go against the less powerful voices of families with young children.

“NCT charity currently works with many Sure Start Children’s Centres around England, supporting local parents. These spending cuts will put increasing pressure on the charity and limit our ability to deliver services which address the needs of parents – particularly low-income families in diverse communities. We need to see more support for these Centres, not less, so that we can continue to deliver these much-needed and resourceful services.

“Spending priorities are going to be very tight over the next few months, and Cinderella services are always one of the first to go. Sure Start Children’s Centres should not be an easy target for cuts as it is families whose needs are the greatest that are going to miss out the most.”
