In response to The Lancet’s new Series on Midwifery, Mary Newburn, Head of Research and Information, NCT, says:
“This series emphasises the importance of midwifery care worldwide and gives a wake-up call to the UK where there is still a shortage of midwives and of midwife-led units. Not only does competent midwifery provide an essential model of care for all women and babies, it makes economic sense. Globally, many maternal and infant deaths could be prevented through provision of midwifery care, and health could be positively enhanced at the start of life.”
