NCT Birth, Feeding & You is a jointly commissioned service by Peterborough City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council to provide community infant feeding and emotional wellbeing peer support across Cambridgeshire.

Delivered by our specially trained Peer Supporters who provide social, emotional, and practical support to pregnant and new mums, both during pregnancy and once baby arrives.

Peer supporters are mums themselves who live in the local area and have lived experience of pregnancy, raising a child and everything in between. They receive accredited training through the programme enabling them to be non-judgmental, empathic and very good listeners.

Our service is for all families, regardless of their journey to parenthood or how they decide to feed their baby.

Face to face and online drop-in groups

Our Chill & Chat groups are hosted by NCT Peer Supporters. They are informal, free, stay and play sessions. They are designed to be a relaxed, non-judgmental space for you to meet other local parents and chat with our Peer Supporters.

We are also pleased to be able to partner with other local groups, which have an NCT Peer Supporter attending if you would like some support, information, or someone to talk to.

How can I access this support service?

Whilst women can self-refer into the service, it can be difficult accessing services when in need. Our team works closely with health professionals across the area to encourage them to refer women who may be at risk of social isolation.

All referrals go to the local project team. Once the referral is received, they will make contact with the mother to arrange the most appropriate support for them.

How can I become a volunteer with NCT Birth Feeding and You?

Key to the success of the service is the local parents who have the passion, skill, and commitment to train as a peer supporter and volunteer in their local community supporting other parents.

The training is Open College Network (OCN) accredited Level 2 training (3 credits) and will enable the volunteers to:

  • Actively listen to the mother and offer encouragement, support, information, and ideas without giving advice.
  • Provide support to women both one to one and in the community setting e.g. local community groups.
  • Offer local support options that can offer support and signposting women to them.

If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved with, please review the role description, and submit your application.

While I enjoyed the content of the training as expected, I was surprised to find it was a highlight of my week to spend time with likeminded women and gain some friendships with other mums locally. It’s definitely something I will add to my CV as I’ve learnt lots on listening, empathy and support.
