Support and information from NCT
NCT offers reliable support and information about the various stages of pregnancy, week by week.
Your developing baby
Your baby is now about 7.5cm long and weighs about 18g. All of their internal organs are in place and their fingers and toes are continuing to get more prominent. Their sexual organs have also formed but they’re not yet visible so you won't be able to determine the sex just yet.
Changing relationships
Pregnancy can place different strains on your relationship but talking through your feelings with your partner about parenthood can be really helpful. You’ll probably both feel apprehensive and excited about what lies ahead so share what you’re thinking and any concerns you might have. If this is difficult you can contact Relate or a similar service.
Telling your employer
You might feel nervous about the prospect of telling your boss that you’re pregnant. However, telling them sooner rather than later will help them and your colleagues support you better. This is a good time to find out about your organisation’s practices and policies when it comes to pregnancy and maternity leave.
You've reached the end of your first trimester!
The discomforts of early pregnancy are likely to decrease now and you’ll hopefully be feeling better and have a renewed energy. You can stop taking folic acid supplements as they will not have any effect on the risk of spina bifida for your baby. It is often after a 12 week scan that you and your partner will feel more comfortable telling everyone your happy news and show them your sonogram.
