In response to today’s announcement of the launch of a confidential enquiry led by MBRRACE-UK into Asian baby deaths in the UK, Angela McConville, NCT Chief Executive, said:

“During Baby Loss Awareness Week last October, as part of the One Voice partnership, NCT joined Sands, the Royal College of Midwives and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in writing to Nadine Dorries MP to ask for a confidential enquiry into the deaths of Asian and Asian British babies.

“We welcome the decision that an enquiry will go ahead into the cause of their deaths. Every loss is a tragedy and profoundly affects the lives of parents bereaved and those around them.

“We believe that a review of these tragic deaths is essential to ensuring lessons are not only learnt but also acted upon, so that preventable deaths can be avoided and families better supported in the future.

“This is a vital chance to make clear progress in tackling inequalities in perinatal outcomes, and we are glad to see this work happen at the same time as the enquiry into deaths of babies from Black families currently underway.

“We want to thank Sands and the One Voice partnership and everyone who raised their voice as part of this important campaign work, resulting in the launch of this enquiry.”
