A survey carried out by Netmums and the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) found 73% of women on low incomes do not attend antenatal classes.
Anne Kent-Taylor, Operations Manager at NCT, the UK’s largest charity for parents, said:
“We believe all mothers and fathers-to-be should have the opportunity to attend antenatal classes to prepare them practically and emotionally for becoming a parent. Many NCT courses are paid for by parents, and any surplus is invested back into the charity’s vital work, but there are reduced-fee places available for those on lower incomes.
“NCT antenatal classes for mums and dads-to-be are available throughout the UK, and 50% of households are entitled to a discount. Reductions of 90% are available for under-18s, students aged under 22 and those with a yearly household income of less than £16,190. Those with a yearly household income of £16,190 - £26,190 are also entitled to a discount.
“We are also delivering more and more classes every year through NHS and Children’s Centre contracts, which are completely free to parents.”
