Following reports that up to 20 maternity units in England could close or be reconfigured, Tope Medupin, Acting Chief Executive and Director of Parent Services at NCT, has commented.
We are deeply concerned by warnings that more maternity units could close or see services reduced across England.
Women and expectant parents should never be forced to choose between safe care and having choice about where and how they receive their maternity care.
Recent events in places such as North Devon and Daisy Hill have already shown the impact that staff shortages, service pressures and temporary suspensions can have on people preparing to welcome a baby.
For women and expectant parents, hearing that local services may be cut back will be very worrying. At a time when many are making plans for birth and early parenthood, they need reassurance that the care they are counting on will be there when they need it most.
Every woman and expectant parent deserves high-quality maternity care, close to home where possible and close to local support networks. Yet too many are facing uncertainty about what care will be available to them in the months ahead.
At a time when maternity care is rightly under scrutiny and further recommendations are expected, the need for meaningful change and action cannot wait. Women and expectant parents need maternity care that is safe and equitable, where services are properly staffed and able to provide high-quality care while supporting choice and meeting individual needs.
The answer cannot simply be fewer services, uncertainty, and longer journeys to access care. Women and expectant parents deserve better than being asked to trade choice for safety.
