Responding to the news that Baroness Valerie Amos has been appointed to lead the government’s investigation into NHS maternity and neonatal care, NCT Chief Executive, Angela McConville said:
“It’s encouraging that the government is listening to bereaved parents, who have understandably requested that the investigation be led by someone who isn’t directly involved with the NHS and can provide objective insights and recommendations.
“Baroness Amos will need to draw on all her experience and work closely with NHS colleagues to ensure this investigation builds on the substantial body of evidence from previous inquiries and delivers its own fresh recommendations that will result in immediate and meaningful change for every parent.
“With the 10 maternity and neonatal units that will be covered by the investigation and the terms of reference still to be decided, the challenge will be meeting the December deadline for recommendations to be delivered. The government must explain how it can possibly expect to meet this timeline and still listen widely, engage deeply with parents and NHS staff, interrogate past findings, and put forward ideas for systemic reform that will keep women, babies, and families safe.
