Responding to the Chancellor’s Spending Review, Angela McConville, Chief Executive, NCT (National Childbirth Trust) said:

“Today the NHS breathes a sigh of relief, with much-needed investment confirmed in the Spending Review.

“What matters now is how this investment delivers real change for families, pregnant women, and new parents. The forthcoming 10-Year NHS Plan must show how this Government will prioritise maternity services, with funding allocated to frontline staffing, infrastructure, and training. These are essential to improving maternity safety and personalised care for every parent and baby, but they must also sit hand in hand with shifts in culture and leadership.

“Plans to recruit more GPs are much needed – but further funding is needed to ensure every woman and birthing parent receives a full maternal six-week check, as well as follow-up appointments at 12 and 20 weeks post-birth to give time to discuss infant health and dedicated space to focus on maternal physical, mental, and sexual health.

“We also welcome investment in bringing care closer to home and call for this to include funding for postnatal care, mental health, health visiting, and infant feeding services. New parents, families, and pregnant women need timely, accessible, and culturally appropriate support, wherever they live.

“We look to the 10-Year NHS Plan to provide a clear roadmap for turning this investment into meaningful improvements for new and expectant parents – and the babies who need support from the very beginning.”
