Responding to FiveXMore’s 2025 Black Maternity Experiences Report, Angela McConville, Chief Executive, NCT said:

“Today we stand with Black women as they speak out about their maternity experiences. The message is clear: despite years of campaigning, inquiries and political promises, racism and inequality still shape maternity care in the UK. Too many Black women continue to feel unsafe, unheard, and unsupported.

"The fact that basic rights are not being communicated or provided by medical staff highlights serious failures in the system - one that leaves Black women without the information to make empowered, informed decisions about their care.

“There are glimmers of hope. Where personalised, compassionate care exists, Black women feel safer. Black women report entering maternity care more prepared to self-advocate however the necessity of this is a survival strategy and is exhausting -  no one should have to fight to be treated with basic dignity.

“At NCT, we believe every woman and birthing person deserves safe, respectful, and culturally competent care throughout their maternity journey.

That’s why it is essential that the recently announced National Maternity Investigation must move at pace with equity at its core. Without real leadership, compassion and accountability, from government to every maternity setting and healthcare professional on the maternity journey, Black women will continue to bear the burden of keeping themselves safe. But even with the best intentions, the investigation will take time – and real change will take even longer.

In the meantime, our message is simple: to every midwife, obstetrician, sonographer, health visitor and GP – what you do right now matters. Treat every parent with care and respect.
