Following reports that up to 20 maternity units in England could close or be reconfigured, Tope Medupin, Acting Chief Executive and Director of Parent Services at NCT, has commented. 

As announced on 28 July 2026, National Childbirth Trust (NCT) is delighted to confirm that Tope Medupin, NCT's Director of Parent Services, has from today taken up the additional role of Acting Chief Executive.

I am writing on behalf of NCT (National Childbirth Trust) regarding the potential temporary suspension of inpatient maternity services at Daisy Hill Hospital and the transfer of births to Craigavon Area Hospital.

NCT’s Newham Nurture programme has won the Community Organisation (Race, Faith or Religion) award at the 2026 National Diversity Awards, recognising its work supporting women and families facing some of the greatest barriers during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Angela McConville, Chief Executive, said:

This report is deeply concerning. Maternal mortality in the UK remains higher than it was more than a decade ago, despite repeated commitments to improve outcomes and reduce inequalities. Women continue to die during pregnancy and the year after birth from causes that are too often compounded by wider systemic failings in care and support.
